JARUGO BEACH
The great diversity of Fuerteventura’s beaches is something that makes this island unique. The east coast, where the gentle slopes predominate, the extensive beaches with fine golden sand and moderate waves, contrasts with the western coast, where the small cliffs take center stage, giving the island a special charm. In this part of the coast we find emblematic places such as Jarugo beach
Jarugo Beach
Jarugo Beach is one of our favorite beaches. It is located on the western coast of Fuerteventura, and although it belongs to the municipality of Puerto del Rosario, its access is preferably made through Tindaya (La Oliva). If you want to know more about this place, keep reading, you will love this slice of paradise.
Jarugo gather some of the most demanded conditions by those seeking a quiet beach: easy access, a hipnotic charm and low occupancy despite it has parking.
This beach forms an open cove surrounded by small cliffs, which give it its unique beauty as well as protecting it from prevailing winds.
In Jarugo you will have 250 meters long and 40 meters wide of fine sandy beach, to settle in or walk freely. Also, if you are one of those who carry the house on your back.., here you will go unnoticed. It is not uncommon to find some visitors with their small tent set up.
On the left side of Playa de Jarugo there is a natural dam, where the waves break on tidal days. It is quite a spectacle to contemplate how the sea rises several meters above our heads, and then collides with the dike.
At certain times of the year, when the difference between low tide and high tide is very large, you can cross the dike and reach a spectacular cove of golden sand, which will be covered again at high tide.
If you want to take a bath in the waters of Jarugo, you must take extreme precautions. We must not forget that the western coast of the island is hit by the strong waves of the «North Sea», which is what the Majoreros call the sea on the west coast of Fuerteventura.
Apart from the beauty of its waters, its sand and the sun, Jarugo has been an important enclave for the inhabitants of the island for centuries. We tell you some curiosities.
The Jarugo ravine will end at the beach from which it takes its name. The riverbed of the ravine and the surrounding areas were used by the mahos (aborigines of Fuerteventura), to take their goats to graze, and to make the “apañadas” (to gather the goats ) in a place named “gambuesas” to be marked
This ancient cattle tradition has been maintained for centuries, to this day.
Just above Jarugo Beach we find the Gambuesa of Jarugo, an enclave worth visiting.
The neighbors of the nearby towns came to Jarugo coast looking for flints, some whitish stones used since ancient times to make fire. The fire originated with the sparks that jumped when two flint stones collided, one against the other.
Near jarugo you can also see remains of kilns where lime was produced. Lime export was for centuries a powerful industry in Fuerteventura, and one of the most important economic engines on the island. Today we only have the lime kilns left as silent witnesses of that flourishing past.
