3 coves in Fuerteventura where you can feel like a Robinson

3 coves in Fuerteventura where you can feel like a Robinson

In contrast to the gentle northeast and southeast coasts of Fuerteventura, where extensive beaches predominate, the island has other more remote enclaves where tranquility is a rising value. The coves that we propose below have several aspects in common: They are quiet spaces, without crowds, accessible by vehicle, ideal to enjoy a different day at the beach.

Las Escaleras Beach

The Atlantic keeps one of its most evocative corners in the Aguila beach, better known as Las Escaleras beach. This cove is located on the west coast of Fuerteventura, very close to the fishing village of El Cotillo.

Take advantage of a unique experience...

Nestled between cliffs, this beach of white rocks and polished ivory sand is a paradise accessible both on foot and by vehicle.

The path that descends to the shore is an unstable brick staircase that starts from the cliff of the escarpment, but it is worth descending.

Las Escaleras beach has a length of 600 meters and its average width is 24 meters. It is one of the favorite beaches for people who practice nudism in the north of Fuerteventura. It is somewhat windy and with strong waves, so be very careful when you get into the water.

Although it may seem that Aguila Beach is a bit hidden, it has easy access. The cliffs between which the beach is located make the entrance by sea imposing. However, it is more advisable to arrive by the coastal path that goes south, from La Torre del Tostón. A little over 3.5 kilometers from El Cotillo, you will reach the edge of the cliff where the access ladder to the beach is located.

Las Escaleras beach does not have any type of service. It is advisable to go at low tide, since when there is high tide the water covers all the sand reaching the sea up to the stairs.

Jacomar Cove

This enclave surrounded by rocks that look like sculptures, is located within the Natural Monument of the Cuchillos de Vigán. It is flanked by Punta de Jacomar and Punta de las Borriquillas.

The spectacular Jacomar beach is made up of black sand and bowling pins. Here you have more than 200 meters in length and almost 20 in width to enjoy at your leisure. Its waters are clean, transparent and somewhat rough, excellent for rod and underwater fishing.

In front of the black sand crescent, which forms the Jacomar inlet, what you will see most are some sailboats swaying, and the trails that the kayak leave when they pass through this part of the island.

Accessing the Jacomar cove is not complicated. You can do it both by bike and by motor vehicle. Of course, with extreme care because you have to roll, several kilometers, on dirt tracks that run through the Barranco de Jacomar.

Both from the towns of Tenicosquey and from Tequital there are trails that will take you to the Jacomar cove

Ojos Beach

Pájara is one of the most dynamic municipalities in Fuerteventura, despite this, it still hides idyllic spots such as the beautiful Ojos beach, located about 2 kilometers from Puertito de la Cruz and the Jandía lighthouse.

Playa de ojos is a quiet and lonely cove located between Punta de la Turbina and Punta del Corralito. It can be reached on foot, by bike and by motor vehicle. It is on the side of the road that connects Puertito de la Cruz with Punta Pesebre.

Playa de Ojos is a cove of golden sand, 70 meters long and 20 wide, which we find when descending the 10-meter-high cliff that protects it. The beach is accessible by narrow paths that descend to the shore, and by some wooden stairs that bridge the rocky escarpment.

Playa de Ojos is not the typical cove where you can enter its waters and bathe. Here the currents and strong waves are constant, and make this space unsafe for swimming. It does not have any type of services, so it is very attractive to enjoy a relaxing day lying on the sand.

Playa de Ojos is, in addition to a quiet place where you can practice nudism or simply lie in the sun for hours, an enclave that holds two treasures. One of them is its large cave that is uncovered during low tide periods, origin of the name “Playa de Ojos”.

The other treasure is just above the coastline, it is an old airstrip that Gustav Winter had built in the 50s of the last century. This landing strip that could have solved the evacuations or medical emergencies of Cofete, has aroused, like almost everything that bears the Winter seal, a multitude of legends, among them that the runway was built in order for German planes to land during world war II.
