Ecotourism in Fuerteventura

Traditional tourism, increasingly overcrowded, is losing ground to tourism that aims to get away from the noise and reconnect with nature and with oneself

Fuerteventura is being considered as one of the best enclaves where you can not only disconnect from the frenetic pace of the big cities, but also offer you the opportunity to enjoy incredible landscapes and learn new things.

This type of tourism is on the rise, mainly due to the change in the profile of the visitor, of a certain cultural level, and with a growing awareness of the care and respect for nature and the benefits it brings us.

The commitment to sustainable tourism is increasing. Within this modality are ecotourism, agritourism and, of course, meditation and personal growth retreats. Fuerteventura is a wonderful island to practice all of them.

What do we understand by ecotourism?

Ecotourism is a business activity that takes place in natural or rural areas, where habitat conservation predominates. Its purpose is to participate in the economic development of the local population without generating a negative impact on the ecosystem.

Ecotourism is characterized by having three basic premises: Respect and care for the natural environment, promoting the local community and learning. The essence of ecotourism lies in enjoying nature in small groups, avoiding overcrowding and impacts on the environment. It is a tourist modality based on the observation and knowledge of nature.

In addition, people who are committed to ecotourism are attracted to practicing sports in the open air. The Majorero coastline plays a very important role in attracting this type of traveler, but the island’s more than 200 kilometers of trails are also decisive, ideal for exploring them on foot or by bike.

Planning a vacation that respects the natural environment and the environment is essential to commit to the fight against climate change. Sustainable tourism focused on heritage, culture and nature, represents an effective contribution to the economic development of Fuerteventura.

We leave you several ideas of activities that you can do in Fuerteventura if you are an ecotourist.

The first thing is to find accommodation. At FuerteventurActiva we have several villas designed for travelers who want to be in a quiet environment, surrounded by nature. Now, if there is a star accommodation that you can book on our website and that is aimed at tourists concerned about the environment, that is, without a doubt,

In an area of 4,000 square meters we have 5 suites, a private sand-bottom pool and Jacuzzi, a pretty garden made up of native plants, an organic garden based on permaculture and a chicken yard.

At Ecorelax, knowing that water in Fuerteventura is a very scarce commodity, they have implemented rainwater harvesting systems. All the water consumed in the accommodation is used to irrigate the garden. Likewise, solar panels provide much of the electrical energy that is needed.

Traveling yes, but contributing positively.

Visit and buy in craft and agri-food markets:

Small farmers, ranchers and artisans face many barriers to access large markets and benefit from the opportunities of a sector in continuous transformation. The different agricultural and craft markets on the island value the workers of the primary sector. In addition, being zero kilometer products, they drastically help reduce the carbon footprint and boost the local economy.

We leave you some reviews of the most representative markets of the island.

  •  Agricultural Market of the Biosphere: Saturdays from 08:00 to 13:00 – Puerto del Rosario bus station.
  • Los Lajares Craft Market: Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. – La Lajita Agro-Artisan Market: Sunday from 09:00 to 14:00 – Oasis Park Zoo.
  •  The Tetir Market is the essential appointment to acquire totally handmade products and articles, backed by a guarantee seal. The Vega de Tetir market is held quarterly on the 2nd Sunday of the month in the Plaza Pública de Tetir from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Visit and buy cheeses in goat farms.

The cheese made in Fuerteventura, with goat’s milk, has been known internationally for centuries. Its manufacture dates back to the first settlers, back in the first century of our era. The mahos brought their ancestral knowledge from the neighboring African continent. In Fuerteventura it was customary to buy the cheeses in the same dairy farm. For a few decades, farmers have seen favorably when tourists come to artisanal dairies to buy the cheese made by them. So, don’t hold back!, visit and buy at the island’s dairies.

Cleaning up natural environments plays a key role in reducing the garbage that pollutes the world’s seas and oceans. This is one of the actions that contribute most positively to our tourist destination.

Limpiaventura, Avanfuer, and Clean Ocean Project are three initiatives aimed at educating and defending the environment in Fuerteventura. All three carry out, on a regular basis, volunteer actions such as cleaning beaches, ravines or natural environments that you can sign up for.
