Los Molinos beach

Los Molinos is one of those places that captivate the visitor and invite him to come back every time the occasion arises. 

It is located on the rugged west coast of Fuerteventura, and belongs to the municipality of Puerto del Rosario.

Before telling you why los Molinos beach is one of the most unique places in Fuerteventura, as well as a place of pilgrimage for thousands of people, during the autumn, we will tell you that this beach is a cute cove located at the foot of the Puertito de los Molinos.

The Puertito de los Molinos 

El Puertito de los Molinos is a hamlet with only a handful of houses and about fifteen inhabitants. El Puertito as a permanent human settlement dates back to the end of the 19th century. Its houses were built, little by little, in a very artisan way, åusing elements of the environment: stones, sand and lime. The first inhabitants included inshore fishermen, people who worked in the lime industry, and neighbors dedicated to goat farming.

In spite of being a short inlet, Playa de los Molinos has had some importance since the 18th century. The boats that made the journey from Cotillo to Morrojable went to this port. From the beginning of the 19th century until well into the 20th century, the lime industry became one of the most important economic motors on the island. And from the Puertito de los Molinos not only lime stones were shipped to other ports, but in the surrounding area several furnaces were built, whose structures are still preserved.

In El Puertito de los Molinos, in addition to its houses, you can go to a bar where you can eat fresh fish and drink a cold beer. You can also visit a small oratory where an image of the Virgen del Carmen, patron saint of the people of the sea, is venerated.

As a historical anecdote we can tell you that long before the first power plant was built in Fuerteventura, the German Gustav Winter planned, in 1938, the construction of a wind power plant in Los Molinos, with a capacity of 500-650 kw/hour, and a reserve power plant, with an output of 500 hp. 

Los Molinos Beach 

Los Molinos Beach is about 200 meters long and has a very variable width, which can go from a couple of meters to almost a hundred. The beach near the houses is made up of thick callaos, and that is all we can see at high tide. But when the tide goes out, it is something else..

During those hours a spectacular beach of fine sand opens up before our eyes, ideal for enjoying the sea and the swaying of the waves. However, the beach is a bit dangerous for bathing, because the sea often lashes out  in this area of Fuerteventura.

But perfect for fishing and surfing.

The most curious thing about Los Molinos beach happens between the beginning of September and mid-October, making the place the protagonist of thousands of visitors.

At this time, super tides occur, known in the Canary Islands as Las Mareas del Pino. Well, during those dates, when the tide is low, the sea leaves some spectacular caves in the Los Molinos beach, which can be accessed on foot, and which are covered again by the high tide. This natural phenomenon is, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful shows on Fuerteventura.
