COFETE BEACH

Cofete beach, a paradise at your fingertips

Cofete is one of the most emblematic tourist references in the Canary Islands.

Probably, there is no one left who does not know, even by hearsay, this piece of the Majorero coast, located in the Caserío de Cofete.

Cofete Beach

Cofete Beach, in the south of Fuerteventura, belongs to the municipality of Pájara. It is one of the most visited areas on the west coast of the Jandía Peninsula.

Despite being one of the best known places on the island, luckily, it is in an almost virgin state. This is due, in part, to its acces through unpaved tracks.  Also the scarcity of tourist services (sunbeds, beach bars, telephone coverage, …), makes this place a Paradise with little influx of tourists and the authenticity out of the ordinary.

What most surprises the visitor, when approaching Cofete, is to find an extensive beach of golden sand, almost 14 km long and 50 meters wide. This causes an attractive feeling of peace and well-being.

Cofete beach is one of the most peaceful places on the island, away from the daily hustle and bustle and ideal for practicing nudism.

This part of the Fuerteventura coast is characterized by its almost constant winds and strong waves.

Being away from light pollution, Cofete, has positioned itself as one of the favorite places for lovers of night photography. Many astrophotographers come to our island to capture impressive postcards.

But, if we talk about images that have gone around the world putting the focus on Cofete, then, we must name the film director Ridley Scott. Scenes from the movie Exodus were filmed on these wonderful beaches in 2014.

Cofete beach has become, since 2006, an exceptional nursery for loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta). Turtle eggs from Cape Verde were deposited in the Cofete sands. The objective of this project is that, when they become adults, they return to our coasts to nest, and thus preserve the species.

As you know, turtles return to the place where they were hatched to lay their eggs.

The  Cabildo of Fuerteventura organizes turtle releases on these beaches, a spectacle for children and adults.

The village of Cofete is barely inhabited by a few ranchers and enthusiasts in the area, among them Pedro Fumero, the only inhabitant of the Casa Winter.

In the Caserío of Cofete, in addition to the beach, you have the opportunity to discover fascinating corners, stories and legends. But, if there is something that powerfully attracts attention, every visitor to Cofete is its cemetery.

Cofete Cemetery

The Cofete cemetery, being located on the same beach, is considered one of the most unique cemeteries in the world.

As we approach the cemetery we will see a small wall covered by the sand. A very old door invites us to enter. There, you will only see sand, stones and tattered wooden crosses. If it wasn’t for the black stone block at the entrance, with the names of the recumbents, you might think you’re still on the beach.

The curious churchyard of Cofete was opened, at the beginning of the 19th century, by the first inhabitants of the village. It was the only joint place, and for which they did not have to pay rents to the Marquis of Lanzarote, Count of Santa Coloma and Cifuentes, owner of the lands
